What is a Shipyard Pipe Bending Machine?

A shipyard pipe bending machine is a heavy-duty industrial bender designed to process large-diameter, thick-walled tubes used in marine vessels. These machines handle high-strength alloys such as Cupronickel and Duplex Stainless Steel, producing precise bends for fuel lines, hydraulic systems, and seawater cooling networks.

The Technical Demands of Marine Piping

Marine construction requires pipe fabrication that meets strict maritime classifications (such as DNV, ABS, or Lloyd's Register). Piping systems in ships transport cooling water, fuel, compressed air, and hydraulic fluids. These systems operate under high pressure and corrosive environments, meaning the pipe bends must maintain exact wall thickness and zero ovality.  Heavy-duty pipe benders built for shipyards must provide:

  • High Load Capacity: The ability to bend tubes ranging from standard sizes up to 420mm OD (Outer Diameter).
  • Tight Radius Capabilities: The capacity to execute bends ranging from 1D up to 10D or custom radii.  
  • Mandrel Integration: Internal support is required when bending thin-walled or exotic materials to prevent wrinkling and collapsing on the inner radius.

Processing Marine-Grade Materials

Standard carbon steel benders often lack the torque required for modern ship piping. A shipyard-grade machine must process:

  • Cupronickel (90/10 and 70/30): Specified under UNS C70600 and C71500, these alloys resist biofouling and crevice corrosion in seawater systems.  
  • Duplex Stainless Steel: Grades like S31803 and S32205 offer high tensile strength and require extreme bending force compared to standard 304 stainless or mild steel.

Software and System Integration

Modern shipyard pipe benders do not operate in isolation. Advanced equipment interfaces directly with marine design software, such as ShipConstructor, allowing operators to convert 3D vessel models directly into bending coordinates. This automation reduces material waste and eliminates manual measurement errors on the shipyard floor.
